The festive season in India starts in earnest with Raksha Bandhan which is going to happen in 2023 on August 31, 2023.The underlying spirit of the festival is the deep bond of affection between a brother and sister.
It is also a moment for the whole family including the sisters and brothers to reunite and once again reaffirm their unflinching bond and love. This article talks about the history of the festival which dates back to thousands of years ago and occasions have been seen in history when the festival has changed the course of history.
The first instance happened during the Ashwamedha Yagna conducted by Yudhistra. King Shishupala was piqued by Lord Krishna occupying a higher seat than the Laurvas and others.
What followed was an angry altercation which ended when Lord Krishna used his sudarshana chakra to behead King Shishupala. Lord Krishna’s finger was injured by the Sidarshana Chakra and Draupadi immediately tied a piece of cloth torn from her saree.
Lord Krishna was enamored by this gesture and promised that when time will come he will repay every strand of the piece of cloth. He fulfilled his promise by protecting the modesty of Draupadi when Dushasna dried to disrobe her after the game of dice .
Raksha Bandhan is celebrated since then and every brother promises to protect his sister when she is in danger.
Another popular story was of Rani Karnavati, the Rajput Queen of Mewar who sent a rakhi to the then Mughal ruler Humayun seeking his help after her kingdom was attacked by Bahadur Shah of Gujarat for the second time.
Humayun was in the middle of a war campaign in the North but was moved by the gesture and rushed to Mewar to help his newly made sister. However, by the time Humayun reached Mewar Rani Karnawati’s army was defeated and the Queen herself had committed Jauhar.
However, Humayun defeated Bahadur Shah and chased him out of Mewar and made Rani Karnawati’s minor son as the Regent. He even appointed a Mughal caretaker who helped the Minor King rule till he was competent to take on the reins of the kingdom.
